What are skin peels used for?
Superficial skin peels can be used to improve the texture of the skin and to decrease the incidence of acne and blackheads. It is done mainly with glycolic acids and should be done once a week.
Medium skin peels are done mainly by TCA (trichloro acetic) acid and are used to decrease lines and scars on the skin, and to reverse the damage done by the sun.
Deeper peels are used to decrease deep lines and deep scars on the skin, and to reverse serious sun damage.
What will I look like straight after having a skin peel?
The appearance of the skin will vary from pale pink to dusky red, depending on the depth of the peel.
Light skin peels will cause redness.
Medium skin peels will cause minimal flaking and redness of the skin It is not always absolutely essential to take time off work.
Medium Deep skin peels will result in a temporary darkening of the treated skin followed by a tightening of the skin and scaling. The process of a medium deep peel will take from 5-7 days.
Deep skin peels will cause a thick crust and oozing surface of the face for a few days. The whole process of a deep takes up to 14 days and you will need to be off work for that amount of time.
The process of the peel will also vary according to the amount of pigmentation present on one’s skin.
What is the difference between peels?
Skin peels can be very superficial or very deep depending on the peeling agent selected.
How much does it cost?
Light peels cost $150-$200.
Medium deep peels cost $200-$300.
Deep peels should be done in the operation theatre and cost $2500-$5000.
How many treatments will it take?
This depends on the aim of the treatment. Light peels and medium deep peels are mainly for the treatment of acne and irregular pigmentation – most patients will require several peels.
Deep peels are used to remove scars or heavy pigmentation and to improve age line – usually, only one peel is necessary.
Is it effective?
Peeling is very effective. The skin is more youthful and radiant, and the collagen fibres are able to rebuild themselves following the peels. It not only helps outside appearances, it also does wonders for one’s self-esteem.
How does it work?
Skin peeling removes the dead cells which are sitting on top of the skin and stimulates increased collagen production deeper in the skin.
Complications are very uncommon and are discussed with the doctor at you consultation.
Is it covered by private insurance or Medicare?
There is no rebate if the procedure is done in the office.
Does it hurt (during/after)?
Light and medium deep peels sting for a few seconds. Deep peels are done under sedation, so there is minimal discomfort involved.
What skin products do I use after I have me peel/s?
You will need to use a variety of creams as a follow-up program to maintain your skin at the optimal level. These products are available at the clinic and are reasonably priced – Dr.Roberts will advise what is best for you.
What sun care products should I use?
A water based factor from 15+ to 30+ sunscreen. You will also be advised accordingly.
After a series of peels, do I come back for maintenance treatments?
will be using maintenance products at home, but it is a good idea to repeat the peels in our clinic from time to time to keep your skin at its optimum.
Can I got back out in the sun?
but you need to remember that sun exposure is the main cause of skin ageing. Be very consistent with the use of sunscreen and wearing a hat. Sunbaking is not on!
