High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
As a person ages, the quantity and quality of collagen in SMAS (Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) decreases. This leads to a looseness of the face and the development of wrinkles and deeper lines. The SMAS lies beneath the skin of the face connecting itself to the skin through vertical fibres. In order to tighten the skin, SMAS must contract. The key point of traditional facelift surgery is to suspend the SMAS.
HIFU is a new advanced technology which has great potential to replace the traditional facelift surgery. The device releases highly concentrated and focused ultrasonic energy that is delivered deep into the skin causing very precise thermal coagulation of the SMAS.
HIFU technology is used to precisely heat the SMAS up to 70°C in a short period of time, causing focused ablation which leads to improved elasticity and firmness of the skin. The probe, when in contact with the skin, automatically delivers short bursts of ultrasonic waves to the target location. This process repeats 10-15 times with each application. High heat is concentrated and focused in the appropriate location to stimulate the skin’s deep dermal tissue to achieve remodelling and production of new, more compact collagen fibres. Patients never need to worry about any injury to the surface of the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions
How soon can I see the result?
HIFU causes skin tightening and rejuvenation to occur gradually with time so that the skin becomes more compact and tight in 2-3 months. The effect will last for 12-24 months.
What parts of the face can be treated?
Mainly the lower half of the face (jowls), cheeks and neck can be treated. However, HIFU can also be used to tighten the skin on the forehead and around the eyes.
Can HIFU improve lines on the face?
Yes. As the skin tightens, wrinkles and lines become less visible. The texture of the skin is improved as it becomes smooth, shiny and firm.
How often do I have to have a HIFU treatment?
The frequency of treatment depends on the skin of the patient. Usually, treatment is required 1-3 times per year.
Can I have dermal fillers or Botox in the meantime?
Yes, there is no problem with having Botox or dermal filler treatments between HIFU sessions.
