Otoplasty - Ear Correction Surgery

Ear Pinning Surgery, or Otoplasty, can bring your ears more into proportion with the rest of your face, and restore your confidence. Ear Surgery (Otoplasty), also known as ear pinning surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that can reshape or reduce the size of ears, making them more proportional with your head and face, often aimed at reducing the size or prominence of the ears and improving its shape and contours.

The goal of ear surgery is to achieve as symmetrical and natural look. It is important to find a balance, we do not want the ear to stick out, but on the other hand, we don’t want it to be left flat. To achieve this, we have to make the appropriate measurements before pinning surgery. The objective of the operation is to place the ear in an unobtrusive position.

Dr. Andrew Roberts and his team will assist you to decide if ear surgery is right for you, with over 30 years’ experience in Sydney and major world centres Dr. Roberts will ensure that you receive the best available treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How is the pinning surgery performed?

We prefer to use the latest laser technique and to make the laser incisions behind the ear, not only to remove a thin strip of skin, but to evaporate subcutaneous tissue, to cut the cartilage and primarily to have a bloodless operation. Dr Roberts introduced the laser technique because it has many advantages over traditional scalpel surgery. These include minimal bruising and swelling, increased safety, faster postoperative recovery and almost no postoperative pain. The skin is closed with special dissolving sutures and a padded bandage is then used to wrap the area. This is usually kept on for two days.

The scar is behind the ear and usually fades with time.

What sort of anaesthetic is used?

The procedure is usually done as day surgery in out full accredited day theatre, using an intravenous “twilight” sedation. This type of sedation allows the patient to be comfortable during the procedure, and post-operatively the recovery is easier than if full general anaesthetic is used.

How does a patient go about finding out about ear pinning procedure?

An assessment appointment is necessary (some times two assessments are recommended before a procedure is booked). Any consultation will be bulk billed through Medicare (no charge).

After surgery, what can a patient expect?

Following pinning surgery, the ears are covered with a multi-layer dressing, which is similar to the style of a turban. The dressing is removed after two days and the patient then wears a head band at night for one month. The exact time period will be determined by Dr Roberts as the healing process is progressing.

What are the after effects?

Swelling and bruising are not common, The stitches are removed seven days after the procedure. The scar is not visible as it is behind the ear.
