What would indicate the need for a breast lift?

After giving birth some women's breasts sag quite noticeably and the natural ageing process also tends to cause sagging of the breasts.

What type of anaesthetic is used?

Intravenous sedation and local anaesthesia will be used. The procedure will be performed in our Day Surgery Centre. The minimum stay required will be determined at the consultation. It may vary from 4 to 8 hours.

How is a breast lift performed?

An incision is made around the pigmented area (nipple/areola complex) and this is extended vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast. The nipple/areola is repositioned higher and the skin is adjusted to form a new breast contour. The excess skin is removed.

How can a patient learn more?

An initial consultation is necessary. During this consultation the Doctor can explain the operation and draw a diagram to properly detail the procedure. During this time of assessment the patient will also be informed of any complications that may be possible. A consultation fee is $80 payable on the day, for which a Medicare rebate is available.

After the operation, what can a patient expect?

The patient is given antibiotics orally, or intravenously; and analgesics. The patient will go home with dressings and then is advised to wear a soft support bra which is fitted within 1-2 days after the operation. This bra is worn for 1-2 weeks prior to the removal of the sutures. Once the patient is home, they should take oral antibiotics. There will be swelling and minimal bruising after surgery. This may take one or two weeks to subside and the time needed off work will be 2-3 weeks. The stitches are removed two weeks after the operation.

What results can a patient expect?

An elevated and more youthful breast contour with a nicely proportioned nipple/areola. A more attractive breast contour will be apparent and there will be better proportions to the patient's body. Clothes will fit better, posture will improve and the overall comfort of stance felt by the patient will be improved.

Breast enlargement and breast reduction are additional procedures which enhance the result of a breast lift.

What are the possible complications?

  • Infection - this occurs very rarely and is usually not a problem because of antibiotics.
  • Keloid scars forming - raised thickened scars (depending on patient's hereditary factors).
Of course, there are risks associated with any surgical procedure during which an anaesthetic is used. These will be discussed at length. It must be kept in mind that the specifics of deciding to have any cosmetic procedure are very much an individual decision and not all procedures are suitable for all individuals.

What is the cost of a breast lift?

The procedure fee will be determined at the consultation.

Depending on the level of cover, private insurance may assist in a partial rebate for the theatre and accommodation expense. The enquiry must be made by the patient, through the particular health fund.
