Which is the best laser for hair removal?

The LightSheer Diode Laser is the best and the most efficient laser for hair removal today. Developed by Harvard Medical School scientists at Wellman Laboratories in Massachusetts General Hospital, the LightSheer Diode Laser achieves more comfortable, more effective, and faster hair removal for most patients than was previously possible with other lasers.

How does hair grow?

Hair growth is cyclical. Each hair follicle passes through a growth phase (anagen), a resting phase (catagen), and a shedding phase (telogen) in which the hair shaft falls out prior to the next growth phase. Typically the cycle lasts some months, varying at different sites on the body. The hair follicle is susceptible to permanent destruction by laser energy during the growth phase.

How does the Laser treatment work?

Light energy from the LightSheer Diode Laser is absorbed specifically by pigment in the hair shaft. This energy heats the hair which in turn heats the follicle to destroy it without damaging the surrounding skin.

How many treatments are necessary?

One treatment leads, on average, to a 70% temporary (3 month) reduction in hair numbers and a 15-30% permanent reduction in hair numbers. Each additional treatment leads to a further 15-30% reduction. Dr Rox Anderson, Associate Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, presented evidence to the U.S. FDA that "most patients require more than one treatment", typically at least 6, to achieve near-complete, long term hair loss.

Is the hair removal permanent?

Clinical Studies have demonstrated that in the great majority of patients, hair loss maintained for six months will persist for at least two years. Permanent hair removal by laser is such a recent innovation that longer studies in support of its permanent effect have not yet been completed. In April 1999 the LightSheer Diode Laser was cleared by the influential Food and Drug Administration in the U.S.A. for "permanent hair reduction". It is the first time that a laser system has been shown to produce permanent hair reduction in a reliable way.

How safe is the laser treatment?

The LightSheer Diode Laser has been successfully used in hundreds of thousands of treatments worldwide without any associated permanent scarring. Aside from a common transitory redness at the treated site, pigment changes occur in typically 1% of patients, and these changes last only 1-3 months. The laser beam is a form of visible light, which does not produce genetic change, and for this reason there is no risk of cancer from exposure to it.

Can all skin types be treated?

Yes. Ordinarily Laser hair removal can present difficulties where skin is pigmented, since the skin pigment absorbs the laser energy along with the hair pigment. However, the LightSheer Diode Laser with the patented "Chilltip" cooling system, reduces the skin temperature to 4 degrees Celsius thus minimising any effect on the skin surface as well as reducing discomfort. The recovery is rapid and patients usually return to normal activities immediately.

Can all types of hair be treated?

Yes, all types of hair can be treated with the LightSheer Diode Laser, and the response in the great majority of patients is very good, but fair and red hair may not respond well to treatment. All areas of the body can be treated, except the areas in very close proximity to the eyes, inner nose, and inner ear. Studies have evaluated the LightSheer Diode Laser in both men and women, with great results.

What are the costs likely to be?

Treatment costs will vary between individuals according to the areas treated as well as the density of hair growth and how many laser pulses we have to use. The amount can be as low as $100 per 10 minutes to $600 per hour.

Your initial consultation, including a test patch will cost only $60. However, if you decide to go ahead with the treatment at that time, the cost of the initial consultation will be waived.
