Skin Peels

Skin peels are specially formulated, non-toxic preparations for safe use on most skins. There are various strengths of peels for different situations and skin conditions.

Our skin is a living organ, and just like a snake, we are constantly shedding and renewing it to produce brand new, baby soft skin. As we age from childhood, some factors hamper our flawless skin such as acne, pigmentation, sun damage, and drying and flaking from changes in the life cycle.

Skin peeling creates an accelerated, even peeling of old, damaged skin layers and exposes new, smoother flawless skin again.

The peeling process stimulates regeneration of skin cells and collagen fibres which helps tighten skin, decreasing wrinkles.

What is the difference between peels?

Skin peels can be superficial, medium depth, or deep depending on the peeling agent selected.

What are skin peels used for?

Superficial skin peels can be used to improve the texture of the skin and to decrease the incidence of acne and blackheads. They are usually done using glycolic acids, and ideally should be performed once a week.

Medium depth peels are done using TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and are used to decrease lines and scars on the skin and to reverse the damage done by the sun.

Deep peels are used to decrease deep lines and deep scars on the skin and to reverse serious sun damage. For more information about deep peels, please have a look at the page on the Exoderm Peel.

What will I look like straight after having a skin peel?

The appearance of the skin will vary from pale pink to dusky red depending on the depth of the peel.

Light peels will cause redness.

Medium depth peels will cause a tightening of the treated skin and minimal flaking. Occasionally, a medium depth peel will cause a darkening of the skin for a few days if the patient has an olive complexion. It is not always absolutely essential to take time off work. The entire process of recovery from a medium depth peel will take from 5 to 7 days. The length of the process will also vary according to the amount of pigmentation present on one's skin.

Deep peels will cause a thick crust and oozing surface of the face for a few days. The whole process of a deep peel takes up to 14 days and you will need to be off work for that amount of time.

How many treatments will it take?

This depends on the aim of the treatment. Medium depth peels are used mainly for the treatment of acne and irregular pigmentation - most patients will require several peels.

Deep peels are used to improve deep scars or heavy pigmentation and to improve age lines - usually one peel is enough.

[top]

Is it effective?

Peeling is very effective. The skin is more youthful, radiant, and the collagen fibres are able to rebuild themselves following the peel. It not only helps outside appearances, it also does wonders for one's self esteem.

[top]

How does it work?

Skin peeling removes the dead cells which are sitting on top of the skin and stimulates increased collagen production deeper in the skin.

[top]

Is it safe?

Complications are very uncommon and are discussed with the Doctor at your consultation.

[top]

Is it covered by private insurance or Medicare?

Generally, there is no rebate for peels. However a deep peel performed in our Day Surgery Centre may attract a private health fund rebate for the theatre and accommodation fees.

Does it hurt?

Light and medium depth peels sting for a few seconds. Deep peels are done under sedation so there is minimal discomfort involved.

What skin products do I use after I have my peel/s?

You will need to use a variety of creams as a follow up program to maintain your skin at the optimal level. These products are available at the clinic and are reasonably priced. The most powerful creams are available only on prescription. The Doctor will advise you on the specific program most suited to your situation.

What sun care products should I use?

A water based factor 15+ or 30+ sun screen. You will also be advised on this.

[top]

After a series of peels, do I come back for maintenance treatments?

You will be using maintenance products at home, but a good idea is to repeat the peels in our clinic from time to time to keep your skin at its optimum.

[top]

Can I go back out into the sun?

Yes, but you need to remember that sun exposure is the main cause of skin ageing. Be very consistent with the use of sun screen and with wearing a hat. Sunbaking is not on!

How much does it cost?

Light peels cost $100. Medium depth peels cost $150 - $250. Deep peels need to be done in an operating theatre and generally cost between $2500 and $3500.
